What Happens During a Hot Stone Massage?

Before the treatment begins, it is important to sanitize the stones, and heat them in 120 - 130 degrees Fahrenheit water.

The first part of the treatment has the therapist place warmed stones on specific locations on the body, as placement stones. Common points are along the spine, under the palms, and between the toes to improve circulation in the body.

Next the therapist uses traditional massage strokes while holding a heated stone in their hand. As the stones cool, the therapist replaces it with another.

If the client has inflammation or muscle injury, cold stones are often used.

A full-body hot stone massage usually takes 1.5 hours to complete.
